  1. Measure your height to the nearest cm in your boots, because a 27 mm sole adds roughly 1 cm to your standing height.
  2. Find your row in the chart, then read across to the column that matches how you spend most of a day on snow, where park means jumps and rails, all-terrain means groomed and soft in equal measure, and powder means unbroken snow above the waist.
  3. Shift the result by 1 size (5 cm) down if you are learning or below 5 years of regular riding, or by 1 size up if you have 5 or more years of consistent seasons and ride aggressive terrain.

Binding size and boot fit relative to board length

Binding size matters less than board length, but a binding that is 2 cm wider than the board's waist will flex the core and turn a 156 cm all-terrain board into something that feels like a 148 cm one. The rule of thumb from the Burton, Marker and Union binding spec sheets is that your stance width (heel to toe) should sit 2 to 4 cm inside the board's waist width at the binding mount.

  • Board waist width: most all-terrain boards run 248 to 260 mm at the waist; wide boards start at 261 mm and are meant for boots 27.5 cm (EU 46) and above.
  • Binding size: bindings are sold in S, M, L and XL, where an M fits boots from 23 cm to 26 cm and an L fits 26 cm to 29 cm; the size you need is set by your boot, not by the board.
  • Stance width: a stance wider than the waist pushes the board into sidecut, and a stance narrower than the mounting holes means you are cutting the base, both of which shorten the usable edge by 3 to 5 cm.

Match the binding to the boot first, then confirm the combined width fits the board; if the stance overhangs the edge by more than 2 cm on either side, size the board up 1 step to the next 5 cm length in the chart.

Fit tips: reading the 2 numbers that decide your ride

Snowboard fit comes down to 2 numbers you can check in 30 seconds on a flat surface, the board length relative to your nose and the effective edge length relative to your stance, and both have to be in the right window before you spend money on bindings, boots or a jacket to go with the setup.

  • Nose check: stand on the board, press down on the centre, and look at where the tip lands against your body; for all-terrain it should reach between your chin and the top of your head, which is the 2 to 5 cm band from the opening chart.
  • Effective edge: measure the flat part of the base between the two turn radii; an all-terrain board at 156 cm typically offers 90 to 100 cm of effective edge, and you want at least 70 percent of that under your feet after the stance is set.
  • Flex and weight: a board at the top of the weight range for its row in the chart will feel stiff and will hold an edge in ice, while the same length at the bottom of the range will feel soft and will wash out in a hard carve; if you sit within 2 kg of a row boundary, test both flexes if the shop stocks them.

Seasonal sizing adjustments and when to change your length

A snowboard length chart is a pre-season document: you size the board in January or February for the coming winter, and you change the length only when 2 or more of your inputs shift by a full row. A 5 kg weight change from a training block, a move from park to backcountry, or a progression from 3 years to 6 years of riding each justify stepping 1 size (5 cm) in the chart.

  • Weight shift of 5 kg or more in one season: move 1 row in the chart and re-read the centre column.
  • Discipline change: switching from park to powder, or the reverse, moves you 1 column left or right, which is typically a 5 cm change at the same height.
  • Skill progression: after 5 or more full seasons you will usually want the same length but a stiffer flex, not a longer board, so the chart row stays put while the board model changes.

Check the chart again each October, before the pre-season rush, because the 3 inputs, height, weight and discipline, are the only things that move the needle, and if none of them changed, the same 5 cm length you rode last year is still the right number in the same row.
